How to Counsel Suicidal People | The Bible on Suicide | Jesse Morrell

“no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” 1 John 3:15

Eleven years ago a friend of mine backslid. I warned him he wasn’t saved anymore. His mother freaked out and tried to have me kicked out of the church for heresy. She was hardcore Once Saved Always Saved. She kept telling him he was still saved because he said the prayer as a child.

About a year later he committed suicide. He suffered from depression. So why not kill himself? He thought he would go to heaven.

Teaching that suicides go to heaven encourages them to commit suicide. If we love them and don’t want them to kill themselves, we should tell them that suicides go to hell.

I have counseled people contemplating suicide and I always tell them that they would wake up in hell, far worse than anything going on here. This always concerns them and discourages them from doing it.

  1. You have to repent in order to be forgiven. Once your die in your sin, you cannot repent of it. So any sin you die in, like suicide, is unforgiven.
