This was a conversation I had recently with an “Antinomian Easy Believism Faith Alone” heretic who denies that you must repent of your sins to be saved yet contradicted his own position.
Jesse Morrell: The word repent is so common in the Bible and yet so rare in the pulpit.
Josh the Antinomian: So misunderstood. Many people think repentance unto salvation is turning from sin.
Jesse Morrell: If not sin, what do they need to repent of?
Josh the Antinomian: Well, what word is used over and over in the gospel that is written to let us know we are saved??? BELIEVE. Therefore, what must we repent of to be saved? Our unbelief. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of REPENTANCE, saying unto the people, that they should BELIEVE on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Acts:19:4
Jesse’s friend David: Is unbelief sin?
Josh the Antinomian: If you want to call it that, then it is the only one that must be repented of to be saved.
Jesse Morrell: What about the sin of self righteousness – trusting in your good works to save you? Isn’t that also a sin that a person must repent of?
Josh the Antinomian: That would be the same thing. Are we going to continue splitting hairs?
Jesse Morrell: Self righteousness and unbelief are two different, though connected, sins. What about the sin of pride – thinking you are good enough for heaven?
Jesse Morrell: But you already admitted that a person must repent of sin to be saved, which negates your first post.
Josh the Antinomian: Yep. Splitting hairs.
Jesse Morrell: There are other sins too like hating God, mocking Jesus, rejecting the gospel, worshipping Satan, etc
Josh the Antinomian: All the same when it comes to getting saved.
Jesse Morrell: So according to you a person really does repent of a lot of sins when they get saved (unbelief, self righteousness, pride, hating God, mocking Jesus, rejecting the gospel, worshipping Satan, etc). And yet you first said a person doesn’t have to repent of any sins.
Josh the Antinomian: This is a neat little trick you are trying to pull, yet just idiotic.
Jesse Morrell: What’s idiotic is saying you don’t have to repent of sin to get saved.
Josh the Antinomian: What do you need to sin to get saved? BELIEVE the gospel. Thinking you can earn your way is unbelief.
Josh the Antinomian: Jesse, you are going in the way of Matthew 7:21-23
Jesse Morrell: Is repenting of the sins of unbelief, self righteousness, pride, hating God, mocking Jesus, rejecting the gospel, worshipping Satan, trying to earn salvation?
Josh the Antinomian: You know what, I should have learned to stop with you long ago. Titus 3:9, 2nd Timothy 2:23
As You can see from this conversation, Antinomians who say: “You don’t have to repent of your sins to be saved. You just have to believe in Jesus and stop trusting in yourself to save you,” are themselves still teaching that you must repent of your sins to be saved – repent of the sins of unbelief, pride, and self-righteousness.
Their idea that “you don’t have to repent of your sins, you just have to believe,” is a self-contradiction. It is a self-defeating argument. It collapses on itself. It cancels itself out.
