IS ETERNAL LIFE CONDITIONAL? CAN YOU LOSE ETERNAL LIFE?
I had spoken to Calvinists who say, “Eternal life is eternal – that means never ending. Therefore, eternal life can nCaever be lost. If you could lose it, it isn’t eternal.”
I argue that eternal life is conditional. Adam had eternal life, as there was no death before sin, but Adam lost his eternal life by sinning.
Is the eternal life we have in Jesus conditional? Yes.
Jhn 3:36 – He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him
The present tense is used, so “ὁ πιστεύων εἰς τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον” means “He that is believing in the son is having eternal life.”
The same is true in this verse:
1Jo 5:12 – He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
“ὁ ἔχων τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει τὴν ζωήν” is “the one having the son is having the life.”
Eternal life is not based on one moment of past faith, but conditional upon a present believing upon the son and a present having the son. You have eternal life as long as you have the son, so if you depart from the son you depart from eternal life, as Adam and Eve did.
So who has the son? According to 1 John 3:24, the one who keeps His commandments is the one who abides in the Son. Therefore, the one breaking His commandments or is living in sin does not have the son and consequently does not have eternal life.
Having the son and consequently having eternal life is conditional upon a faith that keeps His commandments.
