A brother that I have known for many years now, Jeremiah Waldrop, invited me to join him on some campuses in Tennessee. As I say in my videos, all it takes to bring me to your area is a plane ticket and a place to sleep. Jeremiah and his wife were wonderful hosts and hosted me in their home.

East Texas State University

Jeremiah lives in Johnson City which is home to East Texas State University. Naturally that was the first campus that we preached on. However, at the time, a lot of students were still taking “Online classes” as a result of the pandemic and so there was no big class change that allowed us to draw a crowd. We did have some good one-on-one talks with another Christian group evangelizing the campus and we also met up with other local brethren who wanted to join us for the week, so that was a success.

Small Junior College

Next we tried a local Junior College but found they also were mostly having online classes now. However, some more local brethren joined us on campus and remained with us throughout the week, so we picked up more team members. That was a good thing!

University of Tennessee, Knoxville

We finally found a campus during this time that had enough students on campus to draw a crowd. This was the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. It was notable that half the campus was doing online classes, however, this was a big enough campus that the other half who had classes in person was a large enough crowd to get an audience from when open-air preaching. After maybe about an hour of preaching I drew together a nice little crowd and that started and launched our open-air meeting for the rest of the day. I do recall that this was a particularly hot day. It was nice that the preachers had some shade to stand in while preaching. I felt bad for the crowd who stayed in the sun but they never complained and didn’t seem to mind. Maybe they were used to the heat. We had a good team of preachers this day and we all took turns. Here you can see brother Jeremiah engaging the crowd. The students took out their phones and filmed preaching segments for their Tik Tok accounts.

University of North Carolina, Ashville

Once again we showed up on a campus only to find it was still desolate due to the pandemic and everyone doing online classes. I started feeling bad for my host who invited me out there but it turned out just fine because there’s always somewhere to preach! You just gotta find that place! So we kept looking!

Downtown Ashville

Downtown Asheville North Carolina has an amphitheater I had preached in many years prior, back in 2009 or so. During festivals and events this area is very populated but even on a regular afternoon you will find people hanging out in this area, people eating their lunch, homeless people just bumming around, etc. It’s perfect for street preaching! As we preached we had some demonic hecklers. Usually drug addicts who hang out in these parks get angry that we are there preaching. Demons start manifesting. I remember one homeless man looked angry, grabbed a baseball bat, but did nothing. We are always praying for safety as we preach. Keep us in your prayers! Thanks! There is another “major intersection” downtown which is great for holding a banner and preaching. This is a 5 way intersection. We set up with our amplifier and signs and preached. Besides homeless people, downtown is also filled with young hippies. Usually old homeless people used to be young hippies and the drugs deteriorated their minds. What we need to see is for them to get born again before it gets to that point. As the crowds waited to cross the street, we had a few minutes to preach the Gospel to them. “Jesus rose from the dead,” “You must be born again,” “Repent and believe the gospel.” You never know what little nugget might lead someone to the Lord. A. W. Tozer came to the Lord after hearing a street preacher say, “If you don’t know how to be saved, just call on God.”

Apalachian State

Buddy Fisher from North Carolina joined Jeremiah and I on campus. Buddy has been a faithful preacher for many years. He is great at integrating humor into his preaching. It’s always great when you have a solid team of preachers on campus taking turns. The students get a good variety of preaching styles and content. When I preached I engaged the crowd in dialog and pulled the questions out of them. Usually crowds don’t know that you actually want them to heckle and voice their opposition. It’s hard to deal with them where they are at unless they vocalize what their objections to Christianity are. I’m always asking the crowd, “Do you have any questions,” because I don’t want the open air preaching to be a monolog. A monolog is the surest way to lose the crowd. A dialog is the surest way to draw a crowd. That was one of the most important tips someone taught me twenty years ago.

THE STREET PREACHER MOVEMENT

Street Preaching is a long standing Christian tradition, going back to the Apostles and Prophets. Jesus said go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. His followers went everywhere and preached that men should repent. Will you rise up in our generation and call sinners to repentance? We have a Facebook group called “The Street Preacher Movement” where you can join like minded believers, read and post outreach reports, ask questions, etc.
