KILGORE COLLEGE, TEXAS

I first started preaching at Kilgore College back in 2005. When I first tried to preach there the campus police tried to run me off. I talked to the administration and they did have a free speech zone and free speech permit. I utilized that process for a few months until the campus police said they didn’t like how long we preached for so they were going to limit it to only an hour. At that point I decided to bypass their free speech restrictions for preaching on campus by simply preaching on the city sidewalk – which was only about 50 feet from their free speech area anyways.

The Chief of Police even spray painted on the sidewalk “the line” which he said we couldn’t cross because then it would become “campus property.” That line only gave us about 2 feet of sidewalk from the city street. He also said that he was going to go to the city of Kilgore and talk to the City council about banning free speech on the sidewalks around campus, just to keep us away he said because he doesn’t like us.

His plans to ban free speech around campus never came to fruition. He later retired and we have had numerous Chief of Police on campus since. The newest Chief of Police has heckled us while we were preaching, which you can see on Youtube. But at this point, after battling with the Police for 14 years, we are finally at the point apparently where we can preach on the city sidewalks around campus without being hassled by the campus Police…. at least for now….

I preached first and gathered an audience that congregated maybe 20 feet away from us. I have learned over the years that if you preach really loud, to get the attention of the campus, you will get their attention but they will also gather far away from you because they don’t have to get close in order to hear you. It’s a type of catch 22. Usually I start off loud enough for everyone to hear and then once I have secured their attention, I tone down the volume and the crowd will come in close.

My friend Joel joined me on campus with his young son, whom he wanted to introduce to campus preaching. Joel was more soft spoken which helped because the crowd circled in closely around him. He answered their questions as his young son held a sign on the sidelines and listened intently.

Shem is a young man who contacted me through social media and said he wanted to join us on campus. He said he loves watching our YouTube videos and wants to be a street preacher. He joined us on campus with his father, who he said has been a missionary to Mexico for decades.

Shem also did a fine job of addressing the students. I think this might have been his very first time open-air preaching.  It is always deeply encouraging to see others step up on the soap box for the first time!

Since this is a smaller campus, we usually only preach for about 2-3 hours before the crowd disperses. On larger campuses we can hold crowds for longer because there is a population of students which allows for continual fluctuation – new people stop and listen as others leave. But after a couple hours, this campus was pretty dead and we left. Pray for all the seeds that were planted into their hearts!

GOD DESIGNED HUMAN NATURE FOR LOVE

By Jesse Morrell

Everything God created has a function and a design.

God created human nature.

Therefore, human nature has a proper function and a design.

What is the proper function that human nature was designed by God for?

“For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves” Romans 2:14

The proper function of a thing is determined by its design.

When a thing operates according to its design, it functions properly and orderly.

When it malfunctions, it violates its design and is in a state of disorder.

Our moral obligations (how we should function properly) are according to the design of our human nature.

We were created to love God and love our neighbor. We were designed for love. Love is our proper function.

A holy man is simply a man who lives according to his true human nature – the way God designed mankind to live.

Sin is a malfunction – a violation of our design.

Sin has damaging affects upon our soul, heart, mind, and body precisely because it is a violation of our design.

Our world is in a state of disorder because men choose by their free will to violate their God given nature, just like Adam and Eve did.

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection [στοργος: inhuman, unloving], trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

2 Timothy 3:1-5

Emphasis: without natural affection [στοργος: inhuman, unloving]

It’s natural and human to be loving.

It is unnatural and inhuman to be unloving.

Human nature was designed by God for love.

Hey friends!

I am very happy to announce that now with the help of a local church, you can donate to our mission and receive a tax break from the government.

The mailing address is still the same:

PO Box 1527 Lindale Tx 75771.

But whether you make the check out to “Jesse Morrell” or “Crossroads Community Church” will determine tax deductibility.
